Description
One of the interesting facts about these colourful birds is that the colour can vary according to the weather brighter in the sunshine, and duller when in the shade.. And the name comes from the rolling flight display.
Lilac-breasted Roller has large head with washed green crown. Neck is short; chin is whitish, contrasting with bright lilac breast. Face is pale pinkish-orange. It has brown back and scapulars, but outer web of flight feathers are violet, as the rump. Primary bases and coverts are pale greenish blue. Underparts are greenish blue. Narrow tail is medium sized, but outer feathers are elongated and blackish.
Black bill is strong and hooked tipped. Eyes are brown. Short tail and small feet are greenish yellow.
They remind me of a kingfisher and behave in a similar way when hunting except insects rather than fish being the prey.. They are quite partial to meal worms as this image shows, and took this from my hand and then posed for me..

Fantastic image! 5+!
Awesome shot Danny, I'm guessing that this is from Bird World where you went with David last week, I will have to check and see if we have one in our neck of the woods. Fantastic detail in this one, and to get them feeding out of your hand must be a magical feeling. Is it possible that this bird has had a 'hair cut?' The reason I ask is the feathers around the throat look to have stub ends as though somebody has cut them? I have never noticed anything quite like this before. Thanks for sharing. Bravo!!!!!
Elegant indeed! A wonderful photograph!

A great image Danny. Great detail in the feathers and color and a very interesting narrative. Thanks for sharing, Sig...
Its feathers are beautiful. The composition is great. As usual, your description is very informative. My critique would be to use a smaller aperture with a higher ISO and get the eye in focus.
