Description
The electric catfish is the only species in a family all its own. And it produces its own electric currents in order to "see" where it's going and to electrocute its prey.
They live in streams, swamps and lakes of tropical Africa, where the water can be cloudy. So these fish must often rely on special senses to find their way. Water conducts electricity well, so this fish produces a continuous electric current in the water around it. It can detect any object that disturbs the current with special receptors located beneath its skin.
A large one can weigh 55lbs and can generate 360 volts so not one to go cleaning the tank with bare hands... They have also never been bred in captivity. Talk about unique! Not going to win any beauty contest is it!!
Thanks for taking time to look and any comments you care to make

Electrifying capture, excellent well done.
Unique, indeed! Superb texture and detail! No barb by the fin, different from ours. Another new species and an excellent capture!
It sure is ugly alright! lol! Great capture Danny - it's not often you can get this sort of POV except through murky glass tanks!
A very nice close-up Danny and a very interesting narrative. It is always interesting to see some explanatory text with any given photo, Sig...

awesome capture!!!! fabulous !
amazing portrait. so much to lear about this genius. thanks a lot for expaning my world that much,Danny!
Extraordinary face!
Impressive fish and fantastic shot my friend.....!!!!
It certainly has electric blue eyes Danny, being an EX fisherman I had heard about this fish but never seen one before. I don't know about the beauty contest though, I have seen uglier fish than this. I notice the feelers onthis are not half as long as the common catfish, I like how these end in a 'Y' shape, this might have something to do with sensing prey. Excellent capture, with amazing clarity to say it was taken through thick glass. Bravo!!!!!
Great capture. Interesting info.
A face only a mother can love? They sound very unique alright.
An interesting electrifying fish. Nice capture. Aloha
