Description
The Maids are two 600-passenger boats, Maids VI and Maids VII, they are each 80-ft. long and have each two 350-horsepower engines. They depart from the Canadian Docks and go past the base of the Ameriacan Falls into the basin of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. They operate from late April/early May (weather dependent) until October 24 each year. These tours are America's oldest tourist attraction and have carried millions of visitors since 1846.
A recycable souvenir raincoat is provided free with the admission to help keep passengers dry from the mist and spray.
Niagara Falls consists of two major falls, the Canadian Horseshoe Falls (approx. 793m wide) and the American Falls (approx. 323m wide). They are separated by Goat Island. A smaller falls, Bridal Falls, is separated from the main falls by Luna Island. The falls are 52 m high.
The volume of waterflow varies, but is regulated to provide power for hydro-electric power generation. During the tourist season from April to October the flow over the falls is maintained at 100,000 cubic-feet-second (cfs) during day time, and 50,000 cfs during night time, to allow for increased hydro-electric power generation. 90% of the water flows across the Canadian Horseshoe Falls.
The falls are on the Niagara River which connects Lake Erie with Lake Ontario. They form part of the International Border between Ontario, Canada and New York State, United States and are located 17 miles north-northwest of Bufallo, NY and 75 miles south-southeast of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
It is said that in the old days, the roar of the falls could be heard from miles away. This picture shows the Maids in front of the American Falls and was taken in September 1997 and later scanned.
