Sewing
This is not one of my favorite things
Sewing
But it has to be done so I do it
Sitting at this machine
This machine was my mom's
I remember when she got it
She made matching dresses for
The two of us
They were red and white
With little flowers
And I can't believe
That I remember that
Then this machine got put away
For so many years
It sat all alone
In her closet
Then she died and I found it
And I had to have it
And now even though
It's not one of my favorite things
Sewing
But it makes me think of her

my Grandmother used to sew on an old treadle Singer sewing machine up until she had her stroke, the things she made from that old thing were marvellous, from stuffed toys to clothes and any mending we all had. She even repaired my 35 yr old teddy who had lost his eyes and fur from loving him too much...nice memories
WOW...you just put these out there, and they're all so rich and vibrant, and as of this one, wonderfully poignant! I'm glad I read this and saw the image with it. I'm hooked on this series and I'm hoping it goes on. I also have similar memories of my grandmother, though I don't have her sewing machine. I DO have a small wooden box of hers. I keep tarot cards in it, but I remember playing with Star Wars action figures as a kid and using it as a kind of sarcophagus for one of the dead action figures. Funny how you remember things like that, but your image and text triggered that. As always, fantastic work!
I especially like this. Probably because there was a time when sewing clothes for the family was more popular than buying off the rack. Fantastic.
It isn't one of my favorite things, either. I've got my mom's Singer Golden Touch-n-Sew (c. 1967-ish). I swear by it. You know how we all go on about the rhythm of what you write? I can hear the sound of the machine in this one. Long runs, with little short bursts at the end of the seam, the reverse, another long seam . . . Awesome stuff.
OK will you take a look at my socks and see if they can be fixed, ;^)
this writing is just tripping off your tongue :o)..another great work marilyn mick
1962, I was fourteen years old, my mother bought a brand new all singing and dancing machine, you could flick a switch and the foot dissapeared so that you could do embroidery. I can't remember the make of it, but it was one of the first on the market that did this, really top of the range stuff and it cost her a packet, on the never never. I had to teach her how to use it, it was too advanced for her. I used to keep it cleaned and oiled, when the man came from the shop to do a service(it was part of the package she bought) he said he couldn't do anything as it was allready done, who has done it? when my mum told him it was me that did everything, he said I should go to him for a job when I left school. See what your writing has done Marilyn, triggered memories for most of us. I made my mother a three piece suit when I was fifteen, she wore it to a wedding, and people wouldn't believe her when she told them where she got it. Excellent prose, a real joy to read. Bravo!!!!!
Somethings can trigger memories and it is really nice just for that reason alone. nice poem my friend
Triggered memories of my mother and grandmother using their old Singer sewing machines. Thanks much for this, Marilyn. It's appreciated.
Awww what a nice writing Marilyn :-) hope your having a nice day :-) and cool graphic :-)
A splendid dedication to your mom, Marilyn, and like several others who have commented on it, my mom also had a Singer treadle sewing machine to mend our torn clothing and do alterations. As for me, I'm limited to sewing buttons by hand.
down to earth poem. cool too.
I did have a 1923 electric portable sewing machine but I sold it.it was still working.it had a beautiful mahogany wood case.beautiful memory you have in the machine
