Description
The Male Mandarin Duck shown here is becoming rare in its Native China, but fortunately because of it's beauty it has been widely spread, and is a feature in most places around the world.. For once the overcast day this was taken on did manage to show off its amazing colours.
In full plumage, the male Mandarin is the most beautiful of all ducks. The males have an iridescent crown extending to a long crest and chestnut cheeks. The breast is maroon with black and white vertical stripes; the abdomen and underside are white with gold and black flanks. The back and tail are olive brown, the upper tail coverts are blue/green, and the scapulars are iridescent blue. The outer tertials are orange and gold on the inner web and form a sail shape and the upper wing surface is mostly olive brown. This sail shape feature along with the white-eye stripe that extends from the bill and tapers toward the back of the head distinguishes the male from all others. Their bill is red and they have whitish legs with yellow feet.
Thanks for taking time to view and any comments, and my apologies for not being around so much, my wife has been unwell.

A truly magnificant shot of a beautiful bird. The detail and color are outstanding to the point that this picture looks like a painting. The reflections are perfect. Guess the muted light of the overcast day really helped making this a perfect shot. hope your wife's health is improving, Sig...
