Description
These Stocks are in the Churchyard of St.Bartholemews at Whitworth Lancashire UK.
They have been on this site since 1683. The last person to be officially detained in the stocks was Dick Tattersall from Stid Farm for being drunk. An old punishment where the local people would taunt the offender and would throw rotten stinking food etc.

excellent capture and not a pretty idea for detention.at least if this is for feet, one could at least use their hands to block the food and wipe off what they missed.maybe even eat some if they got hungry enough
Great find dont see many of these things around anymore, excellent well done.
Beautiful work.
They do that to each other in Bournemouth town centre at night without being in the stocks!!!
nice work...
They should bring this back lol. Great shot, so no one was tempted to try it out for you then lol.
lol at andrea and agree with caron :o)..excellent find and capture alan mick
excellent shot :)
Great capture Alan, I've not seen these, although there used to be some at the top of church steps(St Chads) Rochdale. Am I seeing things, or is that a couple of chickens in the background? Well spotted. Bravo!!!!!
impressive green stones
We need something similar here in South Africa lol.Excellent capture.
Excellent fine... great capture my friend!
Excellent picture. What goes in those holes, your ankles are you neck? Either way it can't be comfortable! That poor guy who was drunk, got it pretty hard. Heck there is not a enough land in Texas to build all the stock you would need to put all the drunks here on any given Saturday night, in Dallas!.... :) Todd
The only place I have seen old stocks here was in Salem when I was a child. I haven't seen any quite like this even in books. Very nice shot.
Excellent capture !
In a little town called Bourtange in the Netherlands in the middle of the town they have similar stocks only that one is on a pole. The town is looking now as it was a few hundred years ago. They also have a horse made of wood with a sharp metal back in a V shape; the prisoner was sitting on that horse with stones or lead on his legs. I don’t think he walked far when he was released. Beautiful capture, well done!
An excellent find and capture, dear Alan. Superb shot. Would'nt ever want to be in these... Hugs. Di. xx
