Description

"To live is so startling it leaves little time for anything else. ~ Emily Dickinson

This past week my grandmother on my dad's side passed on, soon after her 99th birthday. She was my last living grandparent and will be missed. I had not seen her in person since the late 90s as she resided far away in an assisted living home in Allentown, PA. The last time we were together was when I lived in Fort Lauderdale and my aunt and uncle flew her down with her for a visit. Grandma suffered from increasing dementia for many of the last years of her life. She would seem to be living in the past, often not knowing her own children when she saw or spoke to them. As is normal, with the passing of a loved one comes certain regrets. I wish I had spent more time with her when she was more fully aware. I would have liked to have known her better as an adult, but will content myself with the childhood memories of this very kind and gentle woman. The thing that saddens me most is that she never got to know my daughter, and that my daughter Kyra never met her great grandma. Hopefully she can look in on us from where she is now and watch Kyra as she grows from a little girl into a woman. Kyra can hear stories from the family, look at old photos and a lovely DVD my aunt put together about grandma's life. Grandma, you will be in our thoughts and hearts this Christmas.

Wonderful tribute to your grandmother. Most of my grandparents died when I was pretty young though my mom's mother lived to be 90 so I got to get to know her pretty well. She was a neat lady too. :)

This is beautiful, Kort. Our memories are the most cherished of all the things we have. This was made clear to me when my Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. He has also passed on but I think of him daily with no regrets and I work towards making life as positive and wonderful as I can, for myself and those around me. We only get one chance. :-) Merry Christmas to you and yours!

I'm so sorry for your loss Kort, I know all to well this feeling! But 99 years is pretty good and we can only hope to get close to that age. I think it's always harder around the holidays to loose someone special, my heart is with you & your family! I hope you have a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year in spite of this sad event!!! Big hugs, Akemi

What a lovely dedication Kort. Sorry to hear of your loss. I have one remaining grandmother as well and hope to get to spend more time with her before she passes, but I have moved much farther away than I was and that does make it hard. I'm sure your grandmother is already enjoying watching your daughter! :) Thinking of you and yours and wishing you many happy memories. ~A

A lovely tribute to your grandmother and whoever made this statue had a feeling for the aged. Your daughter seems facinated with her. A lovely capture to treasure.

99 years... Wow, the wonders she must have seen in her life. Dementia is so tragic in that respect, they can't relate the things they've seen and/or don't know you. Well chosen words and sorry to hear of your loss. You have my prayers.

Man, sorry. That sucks. My grandma's in pretty bad shape too but she's still around so I won't pretend that I "feel your pain" or anything cheesy like that. I'll just tell you to be strong and hopefully that means something to you, despite the fact that I'm a nobody from the internet. Best of luck.

So sorry to hear about your loss, but 99 birthdays is impressive. And I'm sure that she will be with you all even though she's not there in person. A lot of people will live on if we allow them. I hope you can still enjoy the holidays with your family. Merry Christmas :)

Greetings Kort, It is sad when due to circumstances relations are not close because of the distance and constraints of travel. We are very sad for your loss. Thank you for sharing. egmont
