Description
Ettal abbey is a Benedictine monastery that was founded in 1330 by the Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian along the primary trade route between Italy and Augsburg. The foundation originally consisted of a double monastery- a community for men and another for women.
In 1744 the abbey and the abbey church were largely destroyed in a fire.
The abbey was re-built in the Baroque style, with a double-shelled dome to plans of Enrico Zuccalli, a Swiss-Italian architect.
Today the abbey has a community of about 50 monks, who among other endeavors brew their own brand of beer and make liquor.
It was in this abbey that I almost froze to death during 3.5 hrs of Midnight Mess services (1.5 hrs. early to get a seat and 2.0 hrs for the actual services) because this building is not heated. This picture was taken in December 2005.

This really is beautiful Sig. I like everything about it, the architecture, the snow and trees all carefully composed to give us this perfect Winter scene. great piece of information to go along side you photo. I was out taking photos yesterday and was frozen but I don't think I would have lasted through that service.
