Tonge Hall, (Grade2* listed building of historic interest). Middleton, Manchester UK.
This building dates back to early 1590's and was erected by Christopher Tonge (1566-1601)
Has been the ancestral home of the Tonges and later the Wolstencrofts.
The latest owner being Mr.Norman Wolstencroft.
To myself it is something special here in my Home town.
Back in those days of Queen Elizabeth 1, Middleton was just a sleepy hamlet in the countryside. The only residents were a handful of farmers.
Very different now, but Middleton is hardly a "tourist spot". Nevertheless it does have some very interesting places of historical background.
I wanted to show this historic building because, I went back this week to take more photos already knowing its fate has come to a sad and tragic end. (Which I will upload tomorrow).

What a charming building! I'm happy it's so well maintained. Excellent composition!
A beautiful Building and shot, Alan. My heart is sinking thinking of it's fate... I agree with you, it is special. I lived in Fallowfield before I moved to Bay. This is a wonderful work! Have a happy night. Hugs. Di. xx
Excellent capture and thank you for sharing this House history with us.
The history of this building is very interesting! What could happen?
A neat picture Alan, and an unusual looking house. Your comment to this upload sounds ominous. Interesting history. Buildings barely a 100 years old are historical landmarks in Phoenix, Sig.....
Wow! This is a really old building! Interesting and beautiful capture!!!
dont tell me they are going to flatten it !! there are some real gems in this country and this is one of them .we only have our history for the generations to come to learn about how we were in the past. maybe not as interesting to schoolkids but as they get older i think we become more interested in our past and find a need to learn about things .i know i have learnt more since leaving school than i ever did whilst at it lol :o)..excellent presentation alan and i really hope i`m wrong mick
Well I can tell you, you are wrong Mick, but I will not tell, I will let the image that Alan uploads tomorrow tell the tale. I used to pass this great house every fortnight for close on twelve years, as one of my duties whilst working for the local council. I was close to tears when I learned what had happened. This is an excellent capture Alan, and is now worth more as an historical artifact for that is what it has become. Certainley one to be treasured as a record of what it was like. Great shot of a beautiful historic building, and has to be a favourite for me. Bravo!!!!!
Looking at the chimney and surrounding condition of the roof I'd say its days are numbered. What a strange and gaudy place. Great shot.
love history. I did not know of this building at all. wonderful looking and a wonderful shot
As soon as I saw this picture I recognised it. I lived in Middleton Junction for 15 years (my dad worked at AVRO, I think its called Hawker Siddley Aviation now) before coming to live in South Africa with my parents. Thank you for taking this picture, for uploading it today and for bringing back fond memories of the dear old Junction (which started out as a village called Jumbo, so I've heard:-) )Great shot, it is going into my favourites straight away!!!!
certainly an unique structure but I can see the hand writing on the roof.just a good snow from collapsing. so many here want to tear down the old houses but various historical groups fight them tooth and nail.good you took this before it met it's fate
Good building! I know a roofer who would sort it out "nod nod, wink wink!" cash in hand!
Excellent picture. Todd
EXCELLENT, MY FRIEND!!!!!!! Roby :O)
Oh dear. Am I going to want to see tomorrow's image? PLEASE don't make me cry over this beautiful building!
