Description
I went back and reread my source for identifying this insect and got the exact name. It is chalcophora virginiensis or large flat headed pine borer, among other common names. It is found in the eastern United States. It apparantly can kill a pine tree, but don't worry one of my backyard lizards was eyeballing it and when I stepped back out to get a few more shots and it was gone, probably became dinner.
Thanks for looking and have a great day!
Wendy

Excellent macro well captured.
I like this head-on shot. It looks almost alien, or like some bizarre machine.

The hated Pine Borer Beetle - never knew what they looked like until now. Let's just say that face doesn't help their reputation any! But a fantastic shot just the same.
