Description
The Hay Incline is not what it seems.
I walked along the Shropshire Canal, Its part of this incredible industrial museum, here at Blists Hill. Tub Boats 20ft long 6ft 4inches wide would be pulled by horse full of iron, coal or other products used or mined here. There was a series of canals in the area and they had to find a way of conecting them on this massive slope.
The Hay Incline Plane is a slope dropping 207ftfrom the here at the top.Used for more than 100 years from 1790's to the 1890's
A series of chains, pulleys and steam would pull the boats onto a submerged track pulling them over to the railtrack shown in the picture. It was counterbalanced so as one went down an empty one came up. At the bottom the were pulled into the Coalport Canal. and continued their journey.
The first incline in Britain was built in 1788 by William Reynolds on the Ketley Canal a few miles from here. from 1791-1797 five more were built in this area. This is the only one to survive and is now a sechluded Ancient Monument to those industrial times.
I enjoyed all comments from the fun shots, thanks to all it brightened my day.

This is great Alan, you see why I sent you on your own, I did this in reverse last year and I can tell you I was plum tuckered out when I got to the top. I really feel for that little toddler you have captured here, when your that size it must be very daunting to face that hill. I don't know if you took any more of the incline or not? I would have liked to see one from a lower pov, I didn't take any when I was there but I wish I had, from about six inches above track level would have had the rail lines dissapearing at infinity. I really like this and the people give a scale to the whole picture. It's a pity they didn't have the money to restore this to working, now that would have been something to see. I enjoyed the fun shots as well mate. Thanks for sharing them. Bravo!!!!!
Superb shot! Fantastic prospective! PaxSV
Excellent capture.
Beautifull. Reminds me to the Movie "stand by me"...
Okay - did I understand you right? This is a rail track for narrow boats?? Good heavens. The more I learn about England's canal system the more I'm amazed. (The idea of an elevated canal, for example, just blows me away.) Thank you for this fascinating shot, and the accompanying information. Wow! Excellent presentation!
Incredible capture and composition!
I'm not only fascinated by this photo but also by the story behind it. I never would have thought of something like that. This photo is wonderful for the perspective it shows in it's depth but the people there give it a very human touch.
This is a captivating history and the picture inspires imagination for these heroic pioneers.
