Description

Sunset at high tide. The history of this abbey goes back to at least 700 A.D. The abbey is topped by a slender spire at whose tip - 152m above the sea - is a gilded statue of Saint Michel and the dragon. At night the entire abbey is illuminated. In 1879 a causeway was constructed for a railway line. During the Revolution, Mount Saint Michel was used to incarcerate political prisoners. Later , the abbey served as a prison for ordinary criminals. The most amazing thing about the abbey are its tides. Depending on the position of the moon and, to a lesser extent, the sun, the difference in the level of the sea between low and high tide may reach 15m. This photo was taken in May 1998 and later scanned. Thanks for viewing.

Isn't it lovely? I did not see it in the evening, but ended up all over that mound. I even wandered off to the distant island you can see from the tops of the walls. The island is a bird sanctuary, and to my total surprise I saw pink flamingoes there.
