Description

Nikon 7900 image. This critter was in a bad situation when I first noticed him. I was checking on a couple of egg cases that had been produced by a Black and Yellow Argiope spider when I noticed this Mantid. The egg cases are surrounded by a large mass of fine silk threads that provide protection for them. This mass has no shape and is not compact at all. It is actually a very loose but dense construction. Anyway, the Mantid appears to have attempted to get to the eggs and had become entangled in the silk. The mother spider does not protect the cases so there was no problem about that, but it was obvious that the Mantid was hopelessly trapped. I managed to work the Mantid free and get a few shots before I went looking for something else to capture. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

My husband just freed a mantis yesterday from a web, and the mantis was so mad he charged my husband... I just had to laugh. Here is this little bitty mantis charging a man over 6 feet tall! Anyway, this is a great capture and the wing looks like filigreed iron work. Beautiful capture!

What delicately beautiful lacey patterns noticable in zoom, along her sides. Bravo for the rescue!

Another mantis that is so different from what I have here. The color, the head shape, the overall body is different. And what a great guy you are... saving its life. A great shot that really gives me details to compare to my own mantises (or is it manti?) :-)
