Yellow Garden Spider
image of Yellow Garden SpiderArgiope auranita Typical Orb Weavers, Family Araneidae
This distinctive spider is often noticed because of its large size and its habit of building webs in gardens and grassy areas near houses. It is most typically found in tall grasslands.
The small cephalothorax is tipped with silver hairs, and the slightly oval abdomen is patterned yellow (sometimes orange) and black. A black mid-stripe with four white spots in the center marks the top of the abdomen. The legs are black with yellow-orange stripes. The upper portion of the legs is more solidly colored orange-yellow. Females are much larger than males and can reach lengths of 19-28mm as compared to 5-8mm for males.
This spider can be found sitting head-down at its web's hub where a zig-zag silk band, the stabilimentum, extends vertically from the center. A variety of insects may fall prey to this spider, especially grasshoppers and katydids. Certain species of smaller spiders use yellow garden spider webs as their own and may feed on the tiny insects caught in the web.

Well gosh, I like spiders. I really like these images. I love the dedication and I highly respect the photographer. Not only does he take great critter shots and is a walking encyclopedia of info about them, but he is also almost a neighbor, lol. We live less than a couple of hundred miles apart. Thanks for the dedication and thanks for sharing. Lee
You come across some really fine and natural insects Richard. You have fine weather for it too. Lovely captures my friend! Steve :o)

A fabulous and fascinating spder series you have taken and posted here! Wonderfully done!!!
Fascinating "araña" ! Well done.
Fantastic capture. Bravo, brave man!!!
Oh wow! Awesome captures, nice crisp images, and wonderful notes to explain it all! I like spiders .. outside .. where they belong. When they find their way inside, I get a tad claustrophobic and need to get them OUT!!! I try not to kill them, I try to get them into a container and then outside in my garden where they will do nice work.
I don't like spiders at all, but I love taking pictures of them. You've done a fantastic job of capturing this guy and his web! :^)
Great collage and wonderful captures! Try spraying a little water onto a spiders web from one of those squirty bottles that allows very fine vapour and then shoot in strong sunlight - I think the results could be pleasing!
Awwww...I love spiders. I just don't get the arachnophobia thing, but then again, I just don't fear any critters.....Hmm, but admit I'm not in love with teeny rodents...all that darting..and so fast that you never know where they'll wind up next...lol. Beautiful collage, Richard...
Wow, you are great photographer Very good shot.
Fantastic ! :)
