Description
This is a view of Marina Del Ray that requires a crane. Harold Adams designed two yachts which I will call "Mauna Loa" and "Mauna Kea" for distinction. "Mauna Kea", this one, had a blue aluminum ball at the top of the mast to keep it from turning turtle if it upset. Was it big enough? Would the mast simply bend or break? It was after all a 36 foot ocean catamaran. I vaguely remember blue anti-fouling paint on the bottom and a matching blue stripe near the top of each hull not going around the back. Was it a blue water boat? I have only been to Catalina Island and to Paradise Cove to launch a dinghy to the beach where Harold built his dream home. I learned to sail on this one so I remember the winches and cleats, tracks and cars, as well as the chain and sail lockers. It belonged to my first office mate and his syndicate. He took my boss and his boss two steps up and their wives and a colleague and his wife as well as myself and my girl friend on a Saturday sail. The car in the picture later ended up in the President's parking slot one Saturday but the Vice President of Marketing was somehow left out. I never met Harold Adams in person but I did attend a briefing he gave on IRAD accomplishments so I have seen him other than in the hall and heard him speak formally. I also had a copy of each flight manual for every model of DC-8, DC-9 and DC-10 which is something you had to be a customer to possess otherwise. Harold was considered the designer of the DC-9 and with John Brizendine the DC-10. We are looking to the West in this view with the stewardesses apartments to the left, south and LAX, the airport beyond Playa Del Rey to the right, North. This marina was new and had dock boxes with water and electricity so you could live aboard and amintain your boat or just have parties aboard. This quay had no other tenants at that time in 1966.

Beautiful work and information!
I like this. It has a nice clean feel to the image, rather architectural.
outstanding modeling Dale.on one flight from the far east, I was able to see Catalina and the other islands off LA,Ca crystal clear as well LA. the only time I had been there when there was no smog or clouds
actually, in '66 I wasn't that far from Mauna Loa or Kea..;) great modeling, well stated..

Dennis Connor's "Stars and Stripes" was this kind of boat and there is a much bigger one just built at the Cherbourg Yacht Works in France.
