Description
The U.S. Navy introduced Grumman's F4F-3 "Wildcat" fighter to service in 1940. The first models were painted in these bright colors depicting a fighter from the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Ranger.
However, this isn't an early model Wildcat. It is a late model FM-2 produced by General Motors Eastern Aircraft Division. The FM-2 was really a redesigned "super" Wildcat that flew from smaller carriers in 1944-45. No matter what model or who produced it, the tough little Wildcat flew from start to finish in WWII with the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and also Britain's Royal Navy.

I notice it still says "Confederate Air Force" instead of their new designation of "Commemorative Air Force". :) Is the picture predating the change or did they not change this one? Great pic!

Too bad, the Confederate Air Force is a fine name. They can't even play Dixie in South Carolina today...too insulting to some folks. Get a life on that stuff I have to say. The image..another fine one of a warbird well deserving recognition.

It's a good perspective, but a little dark. I'd love to see a brighter photo of this old war bird.
