Description
San Juan Island, Washington. We were visiting the islands and the object of this outing was some shots of Lime Kiln Point Lighthouse (posted much earlier). After shooting the typical el touristo shots of said lighthouse I turned around and came face to face with this. The sun was just going down over Vancouver Island and the lighting was brilliant. I'd never seen a tree that had the bark scoured from it like this and still living!
Apparently the wind is pretty darn rough coming off the water (just behind me), but this tree still retained enough bark on the leeward side to continue to grow. However, the inner wood was bare and picking up that sunlight just marvelously!
Enjoy; thanks for viewing.
