Description
The Hyenas were sleeping their den, and couldn't be seen in the bright sun. So I went on a hunch and zoomed in the entrance of their den. As I expected the camera compensated and what had been a black hole showed them perfectly.
The trouble is every photo had this stalk of straw across the middle, that was overexposed and looked like a bright bar of light. (Remember this was on a long zoom.)
So how to save an otherwise ruined picture? I noticed the entrances of the den was also blown out and reminded me of the torn edges of an old photo. So I mixed in film grain and noise filters, then turned it black and white. For the final touch I used the lasso tool and split the picture across the bar of light, then moved it a little closer together. Presto! It now looks like an old photo with tattered edges and a fixed crack down the middle, or at least that's the effect I was hoping for.

Nice photo! I think you succeeded in making it look like an old photo - that's what I thought it was when I saw the thumb.
