Description
Okay, I still haven't fixed Thuvia's smile but for all intents and purposes, the painting is done.
For those coming in late, the ladies are from Edgar Rice Burroughs' "John Carter of Mars " series.
The lady at left is John Carter's wife, the incomparable Dejah Thoris, title character of A PRINCESS OF MARS.
The lady at right is Thuvia, a noblewoman John Carter rescued from the villainous Holy Therns in GODS OF MARS.
Fortunately the ladies had a chance to talk during WARLORD OF MARS and became friends.
In fact, Thuvia ended up marrying John and Dejah's son Carthoris.
Okay, she was about 1000 years older than her husband but on Barsoom (Mars), a little matter of several centuries can be easily overlooked.
Oil on 24" x 32" masonite

Very nice - terrific images & loved the books as well!
nicely done ^^
Beautiful art work.
The time is really a relative thing... :-) It's a great painting of those ERB:s characters! Very nicely painted, and the ladies look beautiful.
which one of these are the princess of Helium? or either..been ages since I read these..;) great pic
Dear David, You need to let Morgan, (mlevans,) know about this. I'll try to remember to IM him also. He and I've talked a bit about Barsoom, etc. I miss the romance of ERB's Mars - in fact all the romance of space travel as depicted by the great sci-fi pulp writers!!! Super nice job and it turned out really well! And Thuvia has a great smile!!! Let's hope that they stay away from the Green Martians!!!! Excellent work!!! Love ya!! Meredith
Gods, but I wish I could do this! It is one thing to render in Poser and potwork the living devil out of the resulting image, but to actually paint...this is exquisite. A most harmonious subject as well. Brilliant.
Thanks for reminding me of all the magic of those books. I read them all in high school many years ago. I really thought I had discovered something lost in time. Hope to see you post other pics from that world.
Beautiful work!!!
