Description
Here's a great view of the CAF's SBD-5, Douglas Dauntless dive bomber. It was originally built as a USAAF A-24B, the Army's twin brother of the SBD-5. CAF has restored it to Navy specs, so take your pick on what it really is. To add to the confusion, this older photo shows it painted as an SBD-3 at the Battle of the Coral Sea. It's currently painted in 1944 colors.

Reading how these and the TBD's were withdrawn from the mission and how TBM's are not Martin is a pause in the war that allows the battleships like the Iowa class to return. I guess that is why the Sea Control Ship (SCS)and surface warfare made it's way back into the spotlight in the days of Z-grams and beer in the barracks. A truck driver who restored a 1926 T roadster pickup was my introduction to those who manned the twin 40's and quad 20's in WW-II. The "Cherry Blossums" were coming in!! Java was the breaking point. Refuelling the cruisers to always be topped off set up the Battle of the Coral Sea. I have been playing CS3 with my Phys-X board and the Tempests really have it tough going after shipping in the channel when their bombs won't drop and they only have cannon and rockets close-in and low. I really want to try that skip bombing and drop one down a stack!! The AAA and AAW is like hornets!!
Looking at this image makes me wonder why i've never been to an airshow. If I get to see historical planes like this one I want to go! Excellent photography, very nice dedication as well.
