Description
I have been involved with Military chess for over 33 years and was in some ways responsible in establishing the NATO Chess championships in its infancy over 20 years ago. Now this has become a full blown international event with most of the countries taking part, this year saw the 2nd stage of a major Grandmaster event with 12 of the best players in the world taking part in Staunton memorial event held together with NATO at Wellington College in Berkshire.. For once I was not playing, doing the official photography and helping out with the IT and software and producing the bulletin of the games..
Here a member of the French team which perhaps at Wellington College seemed appropriate, better to be playing the noble game than to be fighting wars

Military Chess? Are the pieces live folks then? And real towers? Or do they just dress up and then play as usual? I got a schnaps-chessboard from my brother....and he challenged me to a game. Seeing how the pieces are just different sized shots with liqour, and you have to drink it if you lose the piece....needless to say, he got quite drunk before i mated him, lol. Hmmm....mated? Don't know much about chess, but this is a fine pic of a young naval officer working on a "full set" beard. Kudos on your success with the NATO Championship.
Except he is definitely not a naval officer. This is the "Polytechnique" school uniform. Although the students are in the army during their course, very few of them stays in the army after graduating. Polytechnicians are often found in great enterprises or national administrations. The portrait is excellent, as all the others said, especially the DoF. Great work.
