Description
I was relaxing in the driveway when this critter came by. A dash to get the camera and macro lens and got a shot..whew. Asphalt is hard on the elbows.
This is what I learned:
Red-Sided Flat Millipede (Sigmoria aberrans) -
Reaches a length of up to 3", but typical specimens are a bit smaller. This is a very innocuous millipede that feeds mainly upon leaf detritus. Habitat range in the US is mainly in the south. Sometimes also called the Tennessee flat-backed millipede. They won't hurt you but might smell almond-like, from the cyanide in their defense methods..not enough to hurt but I would not lick one.

Awesome macro. You can see all his legs... +++
LOL the things we do to get that picture eh??? You did GREAT here; sore elbows and all ;) God I hate these things; we have those here -- and are one of the things I'm most afraid of ... they creep me out so bad. You managed to get a great shot of him; you can see all them legs and its pretty nicely focused. Way to go :)
