Description
The NAMPO show is the highlight on the South African agricultural calendar and the biggest trade exhibition of its kind in Africa. It was held during May 2006 at Bothaville, a small rural town at the edge of the so-called "Maize-triangle" of SA.
Following the deregulation of our agricultural markets, our Maize/Corn is traded internationally, mainly on the South African Futures Exchange (SAFEX), similar to the Chigaco Board of Trade (CBOT) in the USA.
All government levies, taxes and subsidies had been withdrawn and SA farmers had to compete internationally with (heavily) subsidized items. This saw our maize price plummet and farmers found it difficult to cover input costs. This in turn led to pioneering enterprizes refining/manufacturing Bio-Diesel and ethanol - thus opening up avenues for the unsubsidized maize products! No wonder this was one of the highlights!
Now, all was not just boring farm stuff, people came from all corners and socialized till late in the afternoons, and a great day(s) was had by all! @Zacko: NO! I was not allowed to open the container with the yellow liquid playing with drops and taking photographs! LOL

What a wonderful event, combining Agricultural and Technology in one. Its strange how the Boer farmers always find a way of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, regarding the financial burden that they have/had to go thru, with the implementation of empowerment of so many farms to the local people who seems so claim land that was taken from them, but not doing anything with ithow sad to see so many farms going to waste in absolute amazement to the national government. With such a great event such as Nampo, it should create awareness of the current Agricultural crises staring our country in the face, such a disappointment, so many decide to turn the other way

some people are using old frying oil from fries/donuts. they say the exhaust of the diesel will make you hungry and or gag you.depending on the restaurant!!!

Wonderful design work and narration--you should be working for some huge magazine or newspaper (or maybe you are). The photography is fabulous and I think it's wonderful that every time I view your images I learn something about your country as well! Keep up the great work!

I currently run a 20% blend of biodiesel in my 2004 TDI Jetta VW. Runs great!! 50 miles to the gallon on the highway! I purchase Biodiesel through an Indiana Farmers Cooperation. I beleive in supporting the American farmers, not the towel heads!!

I'm a city boy, but I've always admired farmers. Farming is a real crap shoot and I'm glad that enterprising folks are finding a way to succeed. That's what freedom is all about.(Just look at Zimbabwe if you want to see what dictatorship will do to farming.) Love your pictures and stories of South Africa! Keep 'em comin'!

Gee we have a town called Bothaville! And Botha's Hill here in KZN! Love what you've done with the statue, really great edit work! And what may I ask does the South West Stand do? They've got such a nice booth... And I love the statement on the statue it's very inspiring.

@PeeWee05: Suidwes (= South West) refers back to this part of SA being the south western Transvaal. "Suidwes" is now a trademark of one of the biggest agricultural businesses in Africa and the people at the booth? They were professional GIS (geographical information systems) advisors aiding farmers to combine crop yields with best farming practices taking soil types and weather conditions into account.

I just hope that one day.... we all used all over the world natural oil and stop to destroy our little planet. But in France, it's very hard for find this sort of oil. Froggies hasn't understand anything ! Poor little France ;o(((((( I was happy to read this information, and that in your country, they really try to do something for the environnement.
