Philomachus pugnax ------------------ Quite a rare sight to see this Ruff displaying at a lek in the full regalia this one was running around displaying at anything that moved!! Males are 29-32 cm long with a 54-60 cm wingspan. Breeding males grow the most individually distinctive breeding plumages of any wild bird, and recognize each other as individuals by plumage differences. They can have black, chestnut or white "neck ruffs" and "head tufts", made up of solid, barred or irregularly colored feathers. Their backs are grey-brown and the underparts white except for the black breast. They have very interesting behavioural patterns and adaptations with differing male types some in groups and other satellite males and female mimics who wait until the coast is clear to mate with females.. Thanks for taking time to look and any comments you care to make
