Description
Still on Federal Hill, Balmer, MD.
This is the monument to Major-General Samuel Smith who organized the defense of Baltimore in 1814. Had he been less successful, some other general would probably be standing here. There was nothing incompetent about the invading force, but things just did not go their way.
Fort McHenry held out and would not let the British fleet pass, so the land attacks were unsupported from the water. The expedition leader was picked off by a sniper during a holding action at North Point, and the follow-on commander was not about to go charging across an open field against Yanks dug into well-prepared positions held by forces that definitely included regulars and not just militia and civilians. Thus the attack petered out and Sam is surveying the result.
Enjoy; thanks for viewing.
