Tippecanoe State Park, Indiana
Brenda and I had seen this on nature programs, mostly on PBS, but never first hand. It was both sad and beautiful.

Brenda identified it on sight as a common garter snake. I did a little research and confirmed this. Bull snakes may look a bit similar but their diet is quite different; they prefer small mammals and ground nesting birds whereas garters depend on amphibians, fish and insects and their larvae.

OMGosh!! I am SO impressed that you caught this! I am mostly impressed because you even found a garter snake in the first place. They used to be everywhere when I was a kid...along with salamanders, toads, frogs and turtles. We used to catch them and I even lost one in the house once. Stupid kid, lol. They are no longer around. I haven't seen one in decades. *****

You know my love for snakes dear. But seeing.... no scratch that..... hearing that poor little frog let out its blood curdling cry for help... well that did bother me a bit. I do agree it is a great shot. And life as we know it....... slithers on.

I've taken many shots of snakes eating - corn snakes, bull snakes, racers, sidewinders, common rattlers, king snakes...but they were all photos taken of snakes we have kept in our home (in tanks) from time to time for observation. I have yet to see one eat in the wild... thank heavens.
