Description
The title of this image is no joke.. this house actually is called 'the White House' and I think it is pretty obvious why it is.
The White House was built in 1897 and is concidered to be the first Dutch skyscraper, although that name was unknown at that time. People in Rotterdam, the city where it is located, rather talked about the towerhouse when refering to the White House. The height is less than 50 meters..so I think some fellow Americans will have a big laugh when reading this and comparing the height to what they are used to.. but, I think, before judging it, think about the time in which it was built. This type of buildings was rather unknown at that time, not in the least in Europe, and I think even America started building the first tall buildings at that time or a few years earlier..
Well.. it doesn't matter actually who or which was first. I think this building had and still has some class and that is why I took a picture of it... for the first time in my life, although I was born and raised in Rotterdam...strange thing isn't it ?
BTW: left the city of Rotterdam a long time ago...

What a majestic looking building, great shot:):)..V
What a fantastic building. One can see why they would have referred to it as the tower. Wonderful capture and love the boats in the canal. HUGS!!
great find ! fantastic building !
But Oskar, you know that New York was Dutch, a long time ago, called Nieuw Amsterdam, and maybe there is a relation to this... Gorgeous work, very original!
OK, you've got one American here that is totally amazed by this building and the story you've supplied. That had to be the strangest thing to see during that time period. Someone was a real genius to think about building this back then. I'm sure it was famous too.
I have been to this building.....nice photo.
