Description
Red Kite
Milvus milvus
A medium to large mainly European bird of prey.
This is a superb bird of prey of a generally chestnut colour with a long forked tail. Which helps to distinguish them in flight from the more common Buzzard. They are very light on their wings and soar and hover gracefully at will. They will feed on live prey and pairs may specialise on a particular prey item - like Magpies or Black-headed Gulls - to provision the nest. However for much of the time they are carrion eaters.
There are populations in Central Europe and Spain with a few in Sweden and in Wales. And Buckinghamshire, here one (and only one) female was breeding about 50 years ago but the population has grown steadily to more than 300 pairs. Re- introductions of birds from Sweden to Scotland and from Spain to England are working very well. This is a bird that should be all over Britain as it was 300 years ago. It was even a city scavenger then - would that it becomes so again.
Recently I saw 4 pairs in my adopted Wiltshire so the prospects look good as it has spread also into Berkshire and Oxfordshire..
Thanks for taking time to look and comment

Always a pleasure to view your stunning captures of these magnificent creatures. :)))))
A wonderul photo of this bird.
Neat capture. We could do with them down here for all the magpies!
This bird has an incredible eye ! Magali's right, he seems so proud ! Lol ! Some days ago I've seen a bird of prey in flight over our house, but I can't tell what it was, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ! I must learn the form of their tails to could distinguish them. The color of his feathers is very pretty. Superb portrait again Danny, love it ! Have a nice and sunny week-end my friend. Hugs. V
I'm so pleased your birds are returning. Ours have not yet come. A sterotypical hawk image. (and why not?)
Yes....the forked tail.. I always remember seeing them in France especially in the Auvergne region.. The forked tail was sometimes the only thing I could recognize the bird (or the black one). This is a superbe capture of this beloved bird.
Wow, always wondering what kinda superlenses you have":) Love the dof, it kicks the bird right out of my screen, and what a bird it is, lovely.
Magnificent capture Danny!
Never tire of seeing these red kites...another bird I have not seen..Great shot of this one Dannny~ Aloha!
Just awesome captured as always. What strikes me here is the incredible beautiful feathers, the clarity of your photo shows them so well. Hmmm..if I could rob one :-) I guess Ilona would like to have one too.
Such a beautiful photo ...awesome! Amazing detail and clarity on the eye, the beak and those beautiful feathers. Love this...excellent!!! V :-)
