Description
An American businessman, Kenneth Arnold on June 24, 1947, near Mount Rainier, Washington reported seeing nine mirror-bright objects, very thin, rounded in front but coming to a point in the back, and flying at "an incredible speed" in front of Mt. Rainier and towards nearby Mount Adams. Arnold clocked the speed at 1200 miles per hour or more, much faster than any aircraft of the time. The UFOs described by Arnold were not perfectly saucer-shaped, though he used words like "saucer-like," "disc-like," and "like a pie-pan" in describing them. He also later said he described the movements as being similar to that of a saucer skipping over water, hence the origin of the term flying saucer. Arnold's sighting received significant mainstream media and public attention, though a United Airlines crew sighting on July 4 of nine similar objects over Idaho received even more publicity and led to widespread media coverage of the new "flying saucer" or "flying disc" phenomenon domestically and internationally. These two pilot sightings, plus some significant others, led a branch of Army Air Force intelligence to conclude at the end of July that the "flying disc" phenomenon was not imaginary and that something was really flyiing around.
