Description
Here is a cute california sea lion that I took last week..!! I liked how he was carefully relaxing on his side with flipper up basking in the sun they are sooo CUTE!!...The sun was hitting him just right!!
We have some problems in Southern Califorina with them taking over..
heres a little information on the matter!!..
California sea lions have moved into the harbor at Newport Beach, squatting on people's boats and making a mess and a lot of noise.
Some boaters have tied plastic bags to their boats in hopes of scaring them off. Others have erected barriers. But they don't always work.
Recently, more than a dozen sea lions, which can each weigh as much as 800 pounds, took over one vintage sailboat and sank it.
"They also can be dangerous as well," said Sgt. John Whitman of the Harbor Patrol. "There have been attacks up and down the coastline with surfers."
So why not run the animals off? The California sea lion is legally untouchable because it was once hunted almost to extinction.
But there are now as many as 400,000 California sea lions. All are protected by the 1972 Marine Mammal Act, which makes it illegal to kill, injure, or harass the creatures.
It's why sea lions have happily lived at San Francisco's Pier 39 and why they have taken over an area off the central coast of Monterey.
With sea lions settling in Southern California, residents are urging officials to use water hoses, dart guns, anything to evict the noisy bulls.
"We're actively looking at non-lethal deterrent measures to exclude these animals from habitats like marinas," said DeAngelis with NOAA.
What to do they are so cute but taking over !! i saw many pictures of them taking over boats and ruining them.. still , i like them better than the boats they are cuter .,..!!
love to you all..!
big hugs!

Fantastic shot. Looks amazing. Thanks for the detailed information!
Great shot!
Yes I am very familiar with this problem. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area for 15 years, and they really did cause some problem in San Francisco's peer 39. While they were fantastic to see, it was a problem on many levels as you have outlined and some others too. I had mixed feelings about it too because I loved them....but they werent damaging anything I was connected with. I wonder why they dont use one of those Ultrasonic plus sonic pest controls. One could be developed that has the frequency that a sea Lion hears and doesnt much care for, if it is not in one already. We use them in NH for mice control and bee control but they will deter large animals and other rodents too. I think this is the least invasive way to deal with them without hurting them in any way. Great picture. Such a wonderful capture of light. Excellent Work. Thanks for sharing this with us. Hugssss
That is cute, Kimmie!!! I love this creatures, we have a lot of them around the island I come from, a shame only they hunt them. This are so trustful creatures and so loveable, I hate people who do them any harm!!!!!!
