Description
I was at a Madison SF con. I only had a couple pieces in the auction and, combined with the ridiculously slow pace of the auction, I was bored. Reeeeeally bored.
I got to thinking about something guaranteed to get into an auction..... "Something with a lot of blue in it.....Teddy bears.... SAD Teddy bears..... Teddy bears in space..... SAD TEDDY BEARS IN SPACE!!!!!!"
And thus was this painting conceived.
This one actually gets visible reactions from viewers. They tend to either become sad or quietly chuckle. Michael Whelan looked at it, smiled, and dragged his friends over to look at it!
Oh, and a couple people, on being told I was the artist, called me a sadistic bastard.

Strange concept!!!bravo!V:DDD
Are you a sadistic bastard? If not, I wouldn't worry about it. Perhaps a wee bit twisted, but nothing serious. Your bear doesn't look sad to me...more like, disgusted. Anyway...you did an excellent job on this one. What's really sad is I'm starting to enjoy your paintings as much as your nude photos. Now that's just sick and depraved!!! No, wait...deprived...yes, that's it! I'm sick and deprived!!!
This is sort of funny... I think he looks angry of someone for putting him there :) Excellent picture either way!
If you're a sadistic bastard for painting this, I must be a sick freak for liking it. Or something like that. I don't really know if he looks sad, upset or mad for his predicament, but he must be lonely, with only the picture of his owner/friend to keep him company.
Yes its sad, but it isnt sadistic. I like its melancholic touch.
Good painting, but makes me think the owner is dead.. very sad
It all depends on how you look at it! It could have survived from a battle or space pirates attack. Or maybe a family in a rush to the airlock and the child left it behind and got jetted out into space as the pressure went (which caused the cracked helmet). I personally love it because it makes you wonder what happened!
Interesting discussion. I'll let you in on soemthing. This is the fourth version of the painting and the one closest to the original, the one that really did look incredibly sad. If I can find the negative, I'll upload it. --- The original had some wreckage on the background, twisted girders and panels floating amid the silent stars. --- The little girl in the photo is based on my younger sister, circa age 2.
Wonderful.
::sniff:: :/
