Description
This is a 35mm color slide I shot in 1969 from my front yard. The recon squadron at Atsugi Naval Air Station (Japan) had just traded in its old EC-121 (Willy Victor)s for some spanking new P3 airframes.
All I can really remember is when a WV took off, or landed, on the runway we were on the approach/departure path for, the whole %$#! place would rumble and shake... couldn't tell the WV from the earth tremors at times. In comparison, the P3s were a lot quieter and had shorter glide/take off paths. Much better neighbors.
I started to take some of the dust off the image but soon realized I'd never get it posted. So here it is warts and all. These things were relatively fast and low. Thus we lost the MAD boom and some of the tail is out of the frame as well.
Shot with a Petri 35mm SLR using a 135 mm lens to 'get in there.' That was a handy camera.
Enjoy; thanks for viewing.

you shot this in 1969 !! IT IS ALMOST AS OLD AS I AM !!! WOWW looks like it will land in your back yard cool shot!!! WOW!
I miss seeing these birds fly. they were very impressive with their incredible powerful engines. maybe if you downsize it so it would be easier to view, but fine even with the dust
there is a way of fixing the sky in that picture now..not that i could do it..but im sure someone could... really incredible picture and it might be worth it.. having it done.. ..
I bet they ruined a lot of punch lines on TV =)))great pic for back in the 60's..
it's huge.. & coming right over me!! :] fun to scroll & watch it fly
What a stunning shot. I believe that they were very loud. Excellent capture from '69!
Vraiment impressionant comme point de vue. Par contre la photo a besoin d'un sieux coup de balais. Bon courage !
Very cool! Wish I was there!
eccellente scatto
I agree with Yes, downsizing would remove some of the dust, but wow! what a closeup!!!
I considered downsizing it, but then the impact would be lost... not that big an image in file size. The dust... sure. I will probably try to clean it someday... didn't want to NOT post due to procrastination. Cynlee got it: scroll for the flyover. ;-)
Beautiful composition! Attention has your head!:0)))
Cool shot but must of been awful to be this close to the landing and taking off.
Nice pic! VERY reminiscent for myself. that particular "bird" is probably still flying (I am serious about this), as I was in the "sister" squadron Noprth of seattle until 1998. They look REALLY different now, but they are still the same plane. Alot of "Old Salts" will get a hell of a kick out of this pic. NICE SHOT!
