Description
Times when we come across an IED, (Improvised Explosive Device), one of our biggest concerns is to keep the civilians as far away from harm as possible.
Civilian traffic is held at a great distance from the danger areas.
Even though it is for their well-being and safety, this process sometimes makes us unpopular with people who may be in a hurry.
The process of clearing an IED can sometimes take several hours.
I welcome all of your thoughts and comments on this or any of my other pictures.

Kinda scary yet interesting and powerful image, not sure I understand what an "Improvised" Explosive Device means. Glad I'm not there though.
and those brave individual who have to disarm them..V
Keep up the good work! And don't listen to the media, they haven't a clue!
According to the picture, these civilians are being protected from possible death by being threatened with possible death. You would be very unpopular in by book as well. Instead, why not display a sign (words/pictures) that states there is a bomb ahead. If a fool chooses to continue; well, at least the bomb won't have to be disarmed anymore. Arabs aren't stupid. The word will spread real fast, 'If a soldier holds up a picture of a bomb, there IS a bomb.'
The positioning is blocking the road, but we do not directly aim our weapons in the direction of the civilians unless we feel threatened. Instead we maintain a Guarded posture. There are a few reasons for the guarded posture. First of all the reason people place IEDs is very simply to kill. Usually they are close by to explode the device, and we have to search for them, or other threats, in the area surrounding the site. In addition to keeping innocent civilians away from harm, we also have to keep the people who would attempt to kill any of our troops, working on clearing the scene, away. Some have been attacked with VBIEDs (vehicle borne IED or also known as car-bombs) Sometimes other IEDs that are well hidden are detonated while dealing with the visible "decoy" Snipers have been known to take shots Even a head-on attack or ambush is not uncommon. We never know exactly who is friendly or is will try to send us home in pieces. You have to always be on guard for your sake as well as the innocent people who are around you.
