Description
This is the Antwerp town square and also the open air market place of this city in Belgium. Here one can find the town hall and many old buildings with a long history, like the buildings shown at this picture. They all date back to the 16th and 17th Century. Antwerp in that days was already an important city. In the 16th Century, Antwerp was much more important than Amsterdam, but during the war against Spain (1568- 1648), many important people left Antwerp to build a new future in Amsterdam. From that days on Amsterdam took over the leading role in the Republic of the Netherlands.
