Entry #67

TITLE: "We don't HAVE a clown doll!" THE STORY BEHIND THE INSPIRATION: One night a girl was babysitting for a wealthy family who lived in a very large house. As the parents are getting to leave for their "date night", the father tells the babysitter to make herself at home and shows her where the TV room is. After putting the couple's young boy to bed, the babysitter goes into the TV room to watch some TV, but is disturbed by a clown doll sitting in the corner of the room. She tries to ignore it for as long as possible, but eventually her sense of unease overwhelms her. A little embarrassed with herself, the babysitter calls the father and says, "Hi, I'm sorry to interrupt your evening. Everything's okay. Your son is asleep in his bed, but is it okay if I take this clown doll out of the TV room? It's really creeping me out." The father says, "Take our son and get out of the house. Go next door and call 911." "What's going on?" "Just go next door and when the police are on their way, call me back." Following the father's instructions, the babysitter takes the son, goes next door, and calls the police. The babysitter then calls the father back. "The police are on their way. What's going on?" He responds, "We don't HAVE a clown doll!" He then proceeds to tell her that their son has been complaining about a clown watching him as he slept for the last few days. He and his wife had simply dismissed the story, assuming that their son was just having nightmares. The police arrive and apprehend the "clown," who turns out to be a costumed midget who recently escaped from a mental assylum. Somehow he managed to get into the house, but because of the size of the house, he was able to live in the house for days virtually undetected. He would come into their son's room at night and watch him sleep. He had been in the TV room right before the babysitter came in. When she entered he didn't have enough time to hide, so he just froze in place and pretended to be a doll.
