Calaveras BIG TREES National Park. In the 1870's logging had wiped out most of the commercial timber by clear cutting, this forest was discovered in 1898 or so, and the tree felled here became a site for local dances to be held on the tree! It also became part of the public debate in 1908-1909 to reserve public lands under President Roosevelt for the formation of the National Park System.
