DONKY KONG WINS! 7/23/05 8:15 am EST at the C.I.A Computer Fraud Division Langley Park, Maryland. Gerald leaned in closer at his monitor to choose his next file, a tool he had taken from his last assignment, a hacker site in the Netherlands. Their download section was full of good hacking programs. His next assignment was to trace an embezzlement scheme within the US Government itself. . . 7/24/05 4:00 am.CST Avey Maree Hospital in Croton, Kansas Lori mused over a comic strip site she had found linked from a national newspaper as her shift wore on. The emergency room billing department was quiet, so decided to do a little wider browsing on the web this night. . . 7/24/05 6:29:23 am CST Kansas City East Division Emergency 911 Taneesha has a caller on the line at 234 Easy Court a new subdivision just opened a month earlier with a diabetic emergency. She knew the address was not on her database yet, so she searched for the email address from City Planning that gave her the address layout of the new subdivision just one week ago. To her amazement she scrolled down through 50 or more new emails with unfamiliar sender names and offers from Nigerian Lottery to pharmaceutical discount prices, searching for that email with information so she can direct the paramedics to the apartment in the subdivision. At least once in her frantic attempt to find the right email, she opened one or more of the spam in her mail. Amidst searching her email, she lost the caller on the line. . . 7/24/05 9:15 am National Institute For Health (U.S.NIH.gov) Washington, DC Chris signed into FARS the data exchange central repository for treatment information. Data is uploaded from every state and local mental health service receiving public funds in the country to report mental health treatment for patients each month, and received a message on his screen that read: “System unable to logon to FARS database. File error 9785744. In disgust he pushes back his 1985-vintage office chair and announces to a passerby in the hallway: “Drat! The system is down again!” He decides to go check his email, but as the list of his inbox is loading he goes to grab a cup of coffee. When he returns he has a warning from the NIH central computer that he must check his desktop for a virus detected on his system. Three emails he had typed up just before leaving last night, to multiple recipients each, had just been sent. . . 7/25/05 3:00 am UNDISCLOSED LOCATION in Berne Switzerland: NET ID Messages were flying across Amillio’s desktop terminal that continued to scroll off the screen. A new virus had just broken into US, UK, FR, NE, IR, JP, and a long list of Internet top-level domains through out the World Wide Web, and GOFER. He ignored them all as he worked at another workstation attempting to determine which UDP Port the virus would use next on his net simulated-but-isolated system, loaded with virus detecting and tracing tools. On the desktop, already affected by the virus, the screen was blazoned with the message “ DONKY KONG HAS WON!” As every second passed the 100th bit on the master directory boot sector was being deleted on his hard drive. 7/25/05 8:23pm 4335 Los Alamos Linda, Aqua Caliente-Hot Springs, New Mexico Nannette hunched over her laptop on the edge of her bed, reviewing her Terminal Services program running on her Budget and Accounting software at her place of work, namely the U.S. General Services Administration that arranges for sale all US department surplus goods. She was attempting to transfer a special account she had set up that removed $.023 from certain large volume items the U.S. government sold to businesses from all the departments under the national government to an account on the Bahamian Islands. She was having trouble linking on the web to her account through her blind partner, an unwitting housewife in Rehobeth Beach, Delaware. “Nice having access to a computer always on Cable connection,” she thought to herself, “but blast it, what the blazes is keeping my connection from going through?!” Little to Nannette’s knowledge the blind computer that she was accessing was connected to a Cable station internet O3 pipeline at whose terminal was emblazoned with the words on the screen that said, “DONKY KONG WINS!” 7/26/05 3:00a.m. at C.I.A Computer Fraud Division Langley Park, Maryland. Gerald was simply not giving up in his pursuit, especially now. He had traced certain purchases from an account the I.R.S. had noticed being fraudulent to a Delaware home in Bethany Beach, Delaware, but try as he might he could not trace the transactions back from there. He was waiting for his system to finish checking the online history of the housewife back from where daily amounts of cash transfers were made to the Bank of the Islands, and the Farmers Bahamian Trust in the Bahamian Islands, having obtained the internet record from the Internet Service Provider the day before. He was hoping to complete his task by catching the person in the act of making the transfer through a specially created Packet Sniffer, set up on the Housewife’s host computer by remote to trigger a net printout on his printer of packets with these known addresses Unfortunately as the hours wore on, all he could get was “DONKY KONG WINS!” on page after page of net linked printouts. He huffed finally, and said out loud to the empty rows of cubicles, "I'm getting too old for this!".
