Perun, Slavic chief god, lord of thunder and lighting and patron of armies. Represented as a man with silver hair and a golden moustache carrying a battle axe (sometimes hammer) and a bow from which he shoots his bolts of lightning. Perun's animal was the bear (or eagle) and his tree the oak. After the Christianisation of the Slavs Perun was replaced by St. Elijah who to this day in Slavic churches is referred to as St. Elijah the Thunderer.
