March 2009 Artist of the Month - Lown

Mar 01, 2009 at 12:00 am by Store Staff

Each month the Renderosity community votes on The Renderosity Artist Of The Month [AOM] ... March's AOM is Leon Butchers [Lown]!

We congratulate Lown for an outstanding collection of works in the Bryce Gallery!

Who is 'Lown', and how did you come by that username?

I am Leon Butchers, a Brit living in Helsinki with my wife and daughter. I work in a bar, and Bryce in my spare time, as well as "play guitar" and "sing" in a "band"(Lol)! I have been called Lowen by my family and friends for years and the name just stuck, although I changed it to Lown for here.

How long have you been working with computer graphics?

My computer graphics life really began early 2006 when I picked up I think the second issue of ImagineFX, and saw loads of really awesome work, including some Bryce work by our very own Orbital! So, I got Bryce and here we are.

Do you have any traditional art experience?

I suppose you could say I'm a bit arty, but my studies only progressed to A level art before I moved to Tenerife for three years of wild parties (luckily, I met my soon to become wife while she was on holiday).

Rooftop Gardens

What are you currently working on?

At the moment I have just got my own site up and running (www.lonelysardine.com/leon/), which I hope to do more with soon, and I am looking at various courses avalaible here to try and take myself to the next level.

What software/equipment do you use and why?

I use pretty much only Bryce, although I have tried pretty much everything, and I am trying to become more profficient with Photoshop. I use Bryce because it's easy to use, and after three years I'm getting quite comfotable with it, although now I am often finding things that I can't do in Bryce. Time to get a much more powerful machine, I think!

Do you have any tips you could share on working with Bryce?

Tips on using Bryce?? Err... just experiment, I don't know...learn to use symmetrical lattices, you can do a lot with those!

Lost

What do you think your best piece of work is and why?

I'm not sure which are my favourite images. Rooftop Gardens got alot of comments and I was well happy how that one turned out. I also really like Longing and Lost - they came out pretty much like I imagined them. Although, most of the time I only have a vague idea how a scene will end up and I quite often go back to old scene files and make something new out of them. For example, my image "Tropical" was born of the "New Esperium" scene file.

How has this online community (Renderosity) enhanced your work, relationships, and learning?

I would say Renderosity has helped me immensely. At first, as an excellent resource of tutorials and freebies, and now more as a place for friendly competition, trying to do a cooler image than the other guys and girls, mwaahaha!!

Do you have any parting comments, or advice for other artists?

Well, guess that's it. Thanks to everyone for voting for me and thanks to all the great artists that inspire me daily! Keep creating!

Cheers, Leon (a.k.a. Lown)

Artist of the Month is highlighting a talented Renderosity artist that has been nominated by mods and admins, and voted by the community. Recognition is given to this member for their collection of works for that year.

Since we only select one AOM per month, it is not about their works for that particular month. Instead, it is about highlighting a talented artist's works for that year, and they are recognized during that month.
