Dark Times For Harry, Good News For Muggles

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Dark times, indeed! For, while Harry Potter is in his fourth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, there is yet more danger for the boy who is now fourteen-years of age. Moviegoers everywhere are in for a real treat with yet a darker installment in the Harry Potter series.

In the beginning of the movie they show a glimpse of the Quidditch World Cup Tournament. Though I would have liked to see more of this, the arena where it was held was spectacular. Its not long thereafter, when they are back at the school and the word is out on another tournament.

This story mainly revolves around the Tri Wizard Tournament, whose contestants are drawn from the Goblet of Fire. It is a tournament between Hogwarts and two rival schools. There are, of course, many deeper details surrounding the Goblet of Fire, Harry, and events of the past. There is also the familiarity of names, settings, and hints throughout. Small details are plentiful, and connect this movie with the others, really drawing the viewer into the story.

Many of the characters from the previous films are present, including one brought back from the second of the series, but I dont want to give away any surprises. There are also a few new additions, mainly a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, "Mad-Eye" Moody, playing a pivotal role.

This movie has everything. Though the story is dark, there are generous bits of humor throughout. There are scenes that show the deepening friendship of the main characters, and also hints of romantic interests. The main characters are in their teenage years, after all.

The special effects and atmosphere of the film make it a must-see for the big screen. There were a lot of smoke effects in particular that I really enjoyed and wish I could duplicate. In addition, there is an underwater scene that shows some really cool animated creatures. Also, true to the previous films, it was shot in mainly the same eerily unsaturated fashion.

The movie ends as it should, with only enough questions hanging for the continuation of the series. There is not too much left open, so that anyone would feel cheated leaving the theater. Though the movie does well to explain most everything, there are some details and characters still left within the pages of the book. So, if you have read the book, you will probably find yourself wanting to read it again. Over-all, I think it is the best of the films so far. My family and I left the theater with the yearning to see it again...right away.
