Who is 'as07'?

First of all, thank you very much to anyone that voted for me, and congratulations to all the nominees. You guys are all great!!! This was a very tough competition.

And now for "as07": as07, aka Andre Surya, is a 3D Artist from Jakarta, Indonesia, 18 years old and currently enrolling in college of Graphic Design in Tarumanagara University.

How long have you have you been rendering/doing computer graphics?

I think it's about two and a half years (hey...that question reminds me that I was really happy to see my sphere attached with some bump mapping in my first rendered images first time I learned 3d ,hahaha :D).

Do you have traditional art experience?

No. Actually, I draw occasionally, but the result is not so good. When I draw I usually focus on character, not places, buildings, etc, which what i've done extensively in 3D.

What are you currently working on?

Actually I just finished up my short film. I am also thinking about moving into animation school and pursue Animation degree. If there is anyone interested in my speciality (fantasy based object/architectural scenes) please don't hestitate to contact me. I will need that much more work experience.

What software do you use and why?

I use 3Dsmax 4.2 as the main tool and Brazil r/s for rendering lately, and why? That was really good question because as a matter of fact, I entered 3D world by accident. Well here is the story. It all came from Colin McRae Rally 2, a rally game created by Codemaster. There was some hack/specific program on the net that can modify the models of the cars and it needs 3Dsmax to do so, so I bought the program. The first time I want to edit the model, it was too hard, so I got frustrated and didn't touch the software again. One day when I didn’t have anything to do I tried the software again. I made spheres here and there and until now I have not finished trying the software. I did try Maya, Lightwave, and Vue D'esprit as well, but I think Max interface is very easy to use and that was the thing that is most important for me.

What do you think your best piece of work is and why?

Well, that was a rather hard question, but I think I will choose MY SHORT FILM for sure!!! (for those who don't know about it you can download it at and second is my still image that's called "Silvanus" :D, Why? Cause I think Silvanus have really advanced modeling and texturing than my other previous work, I also like the building model :D

Why do you like to work with 3D software?

First: The quality of the images is nothing sort of Superior!!!!!

Two: It's very efficient and much easier than any other tools (considering that I can't really draw on paper).

Third: Automatic. I mean you don't need to draw the reflection for hours to get the right reflection like you did in the traditional art and you don't need to draw shadow/shading for hours to get the right and perfect
shadow/shading, etc. It's all "AUTOMATIC".

and The last one: I really like rendering process, it's soooooo coool!!! :D

What inspires you?

That was a great question. Actually my inspiration always comes from my mind and MUSIC. If anyone ever think I was inspired by Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy art director) I don't think he inspired me, but I really admire him as an excellent artist. His work is simply outstanding, but if you talk about inspiration maybe Nobuo Uematsu and Yasunori Mitsuda (Squaresoft music composer) are the ones that helped me more than anyone, big thanks for them :D

How has this online community (Renderosity) enhanced your work, relationships, and learning?

Actually this community was helped me tremendously and simply the biggest online graphics community around the world!!! I think I am really lucky to be a member of Renderosity, and also want to thank you all for the lovely and sweet comment that you gave to me :D

Parting Comments / Advice to other Artists?

First thing (for me), the most important to get into 3D world is that YOU MUST LOVE DOING IT!!! (I don't think you will achieve success if you think about the money that you can get in this world (3D) but don't really like it.)

Second: Don't just sit down in front of your computers for hours. It will not help you much. You should go out and see how shadow work at evening, afternoon: Is it sharp, soft, etc, study how the lighting work in the real world, is the ambient part of the lighting white or bluish; and also study how texture work in the real world: Is it very very clean, have some dirt, etc, etc, I mean Hey!!! you are not programmer, you are an artist, right?

The last one: you must have patience, passion, and perseverence, To be good you need hard work and dedication for many years. Good luck!

Andre Surya

Amazing work, Andre. The surrealism in your early works reminds me of some of the dreams I had. I'm looking forward to see more of your works in the future.
