January 2008 Artist of the Month - Mina Sindley [NekhbetSun]

Dec 30, 2007 at 12:00 am by Store Staff

Each month the Renderosity community votes on The Renderosity Artist Of The Month [AOM] ... January's AOM is Mina Sindley [NekhbetSun]! We congratulate Mina for an outstanding collection of works in the 2D Gallery!

Hi everyone!

First, I'd like to extend a BIG THANKS to all of you who voted! It was an immense honor just to be nominated, much less win! All of the nominees are so very talented and unique artists! And, I must say this sure made my day/year, and then some! WOW!

Who is 'NekhbetSun', and how did you come by that username?

Now about that Nekhbet name. Kind of unusual, eh? I've always been interested in Egyptology and raptors (which in itself is a mighty unusual combination), and having found out Nekhbet is the vulture Goddess of ancient Egypt, well, like in the 3 bears tale, it was jusss' right!

How long have you been working with computer graphics?

I've been doing digital art now for a little over 10 years and absolutely love it. I'd like to give a little plug and big thanks to James, aka JLyons here at Renderosity, for getting me started in the wonderful world of digital art, and being an infinitely patient teacher and putting up with all my silly questions (smiling).

I've also done lots of other "artsy" things along the way, too. Living here in Florida has afforded me the opportunity to do art and craft shows all year long (which I did for about 15 years), mostly country crafts, with some oil and acrylic work thrown in for good measure. As far as the digital, I started out with Paint Shop Pro, which I still use, and then progressed to Photoshop, where I was immediately hooked!

What are you currently working on?

Well now, what I'm currently working on, since this is just a hobby, nothing too serious...just always have a lot of irons in the fire going at the same time. Don't know if you all are the same way, but I find it always helps to do a pic, let it sit, then come back in a few days for a fresh look...always helps the perspective (smiling).

What software/equipment do you use and why?

As I mentioned before, I use PSP and Photoshop, and my daughter just got me a Wacom tablet for Christmas, which I must say I was pleased as punch to receive! Thanks Heather! Also, a dear friend gave me a copy of Bryce some time ago, and maybe when I get up the nerve (haha), I'll actually learn the program! Big thanks to you, too, Gene (aka 2Loose2Trek)!

What do you think your best piece of work is and why?

Now, let's see...what do I think is my best piece...whew, toughy...probably "When The Clock Strikes". Guess the planets must have been aligned just right, for this pic came together with remarkable ease. Wish I could say the same for all of them!

 - When The Clock Strikes -

Who/what inspires you?

Inspiration? Easy one here. So many of the wonderful artists here give me inspiration! Really! Since I've been a member of Renderosity for over 2 years now, I feel I've grown as a digital artist and certainly learned a few more things along the way.

So many people always ask me where I get all my ideas from. Well, lots of different things seem to just pop in my head and give impetus to a new image, i.e. song titles, poetry, books I've read, current events, historical interests...well, you get the picture (smiling).

And like the ol' "which came first , the chicken or the egg" thing, sometimes I'll start with an idea and title and go from there. Or often it's just the image that comes first, and then hopefully when done, the Muse will bestow upon me, and the image, an appropriate title.

 - There Is Only This Moment -

How has this online community (Renderosity) enhanced your work, relationships, and learning?

Now, how has the Renderosity Community enhanced my work?  Ohhh, easy one! I am in such total awe of all the massive talent evident here!  With all the amazing art I see at Renderosity, it certainly is an inspiration to aspire to even better things!

Parting Comments / Advice to other Artists?

And my advice to other artists? Well, I guess the main thing would be to just "think outside the box." Don't get stuck in a rut. Experiment. Don't think that one particular tool can do just a certain thing...see if you can squeeze just a little bit more out of it  (smiling).

So in closing, once again, thanks to all who cast their vote my way! I hope you know how much I sincerely treasure each and every one of you...your comments, critiques, tips and most of all your friendship! I am honored...

Artist of the Month is highlighting a talented Renderosity artist that has been nominated by mods and admins, and voted by the community. Recognition is given to this member for their collection of works for that year.

Since we only select one AOM per month, it is not about their works for that particular month. Instead, it is about highlighting a talented artist's works for that year, and they are recognized during that month.

To learn more about Renderosity's Artist Of The Month [AOM] award, and to view our past AOM's, please visit the AOM 2007 page, which can also be found on the sidebar under Highlights.
