August 2007 Artist of the Month - short_ribs

Aug 01, 2007 at 12:00 am by Store Staff

Each month the Renderosity community votes on The Renderosity Artist Of The Month [AOM] ... August's AOM is short_ribs. We congratulate short_ribs for his outstanding work in the Photography Gallery!

Who is 'short_ribs'?

Short_ribs is Kai Fisher, a 19-year-old Media Arts student situated down under in New Zealand, though originally from Zimbabwe. He’s an avid photographer who has been obsessed by it for the past 2 ½ years. When weather is bad and he finds spare time, he’s all about fine tuning his Photoshop skills and ever expanding his knowledge in the photographic field.

How long have you been into photography?

Ahhh lets see, it would have been about two and a half years ago that I got my first ’real’ camera, and also where I started taking it more seriously, looking at photography as an artistic medium I could work with to create/capture my ‘visions.’

Do you have traditional art experience?

No not really, I spent my early days trying to draw but the best I ever got was when I was tracing a simple toon or two, that’s about as far as I ever go with that kind of art. Though I was surrounded by many amazing artists

What are you currently working on?

Currently I have a few assignments that are due in about 2 weeks time but other than that, I am working hard on getting my name out, refining my work, and trying to get myself a website up and running as soon as possible. Also HDR photography has been my latest personal project… I would like to try get a better understanding of it all and be able to use it to the best of my abilities.

What software/equipment do you use and why?

Ok, we will start with equipment. I use a Canon 30D now, but that only changed a few weeks ago. Before that, I had a Canon 300D and that’s what I did most my work with. As to why I chose Canon, it was somewhat of an immature way to go about it, but I guess most of it was due to the reputation they seem to have and all them big L series lenses I saw on TV at major sporting events and such…

As for the software, I use Photoshop as my main program to do everything. Why? Ah, I guess that’s another one of those that the reputation that preceded it played a big part in the decision. (I’m still working on better techniques on choosing things…) Recently I bought Photomatix for myself. I got this cause I really loved the HDR images I had seen floating around the net and also the whooping 70% student discount that I could claim on it just made it that bit more justifiable…

What do you think your best piece of work is and why?

After having a good scroll through my gallery, I guess one of my best would have to be "On The Go Slow." The visual impact it has is what I love about it, the way I tried something different and it worked. Some still don’t like the tilted horizon, but I feel it adds another dimension to the image. Character, colour and a story behind, and how I envisioned it at the time. I captured what I wanted…

Why do you enjoy photography?

I guess it all starts with me being an impatient person, dare I say it. The fact that I could take 1/1000th of a second to create a piece of work and then watch it pop up on that small display screen was just me… Though as I later found out that this doesn’t mean that all the good shots would come just like that. Also being able to wander around in such a beautiful country and take photos really does feel rewarding at the end of the day, especially when you‘ve got something to show for it.

Who/what inspires you?

This is a simple one…Good work. That there has got to be the biggest inspiration I’ve ever run in to. So therefore, all of you who upload your ‘good work’ here on RR are my source of inspiration. There are a few in particular that I would be tempted to name but I won't. They know who they are…

How has this online community (Renderosity) enhanced your work, relationships, and learning?

Well, it’s sure made me more aware of the artistic community and talent that surrounds me. As already mentioned, the inspiration that I receive from this place has played the biggest part in making my work what it is. Last, but probably the most important I guess, is the knowledge that other people are willing to share within this community...

Parting Comments / Advice to other Artists?

Well, I just want to say a big thanks to all of you wonderful people that have inspired me, and also to those that have got me here... As for advice, I guess the best I can do is tell you how important it is to NEVER give up… I’ll remind you to shoot for the moon and if you miss you’ll be among the stars. And lastly, be driven by perfection, not put off by it. Even if you feel you‘ll never get it, have a bit of faith in yourself and remember time is the best tutor of them all…

Artist of the Month is highlighting a talented Renderosity artist that has been nominated by mods and admins, and voted by the community. Recognition is given to this member for their collection of works for that year.

Since we only select one AOM per month, it is not about their works for that particular month. Instead, it is about highlighting a talented artist's works for that year, and they are recognized during that month.
