Terrains Like No Other

Related: None

Recently, my husband and I went on a trip to the north west part of Nebraska and the south west part of South Dakota. While I have taken trips before into the mountians of Colorado and New Mexico, as with my other recent trips, it was with a different perspective.

One of the places we visited was the Badlands of South Dakota. The rock formations were right out of the terrain generating programs, especially GeoControl. I decided to make some of these available if anyone wants to use them for an idea for a terrain. These are not meant to be used as backdrops. They are only to be used for ideas in generating terrains and materials in terrain generating programs. Since sometimes a place to start causes the most problems, I hope these will be useful.

These Badlands are spectacular rock formations that are incredibly varied in both color, texture, and shape.

Outstanding reference images Paula, thanks so much for sharing. Also, what kind of camera did you use to take these shots? They look almost too beautiful to be real :]
    Great to have you back.

Very inspiring photos, brings back that wanderlust. Did you take any during "magic hour" though?

I used a Canon Rebel XT for these pictures.

I wish we had been able to be in the badlands at either sunrise or sunset. Unfortunately we were there in the height of the day when the sun was fairly overhead.

Nice snapshots Paula. I live in SD and have been to see the Badlands many times. The SD Badlands are truely spectacular at sunrise and at sunset if you can see them at these times of the day. But mid-day is also spectacular indeed.
