Subject: What does irradiance do exactly? max to 100%

MistyLaraCarrara ( ) posted Fri, 31 October 2014 at 9:00 AM · edited Thu, 28 May 2026 at 3:42 AM

i max my irradiance render setting to 100%, i feel like renders looks better, but maybe it's my imagination?

does it have anything to do with glow and idl?

it doesn't seem to effect shmootz.

Thanks 😄

with no irradiance caching, results using IDL not subject to random method of FFRender.  artifacts are reduced or eliminated.  (PP2012 and PP2014 (SR5 and later).

setting IC = 100  in render options not same as unchecking IC in render options.

e.g.  IC = 100 yields IDL IC = 95, meaning giMaxError is still nonzero (0.05).  you gotta use d3d's FFRender script for easier control.

if fixes a glitch with IDL?
i don't have the uncheck IC render option.
i've been using irradiance = 100% since P7.

but, was wondering what irradiance does exactly?

does it improve specular highlights, maybe? to be coupled with a specular light?

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

so basically a pixel is borrowing light calculations from it's neighbors?

Yes. The lower the IC quality, the more borrowing happens. This saves a lot of time.
