How do you install / locate freebie items for Genesis figures so that DAZ Studio can recognize them and find them with Smart Content tab?
...or is that feature only for items purchased from DAZ?

IIRC, Smart Content items are inherent to DAZ content although 3rd party content would need to have its metadata rebuilt for that feature to happen. There may have been a thread in the forum addressing how to go about it but that was quite some time ago.

In that case, where do I copy the files in order to be able to find them within DAZ Studio?

Your file path should be: (before Daz 3D should be the drive you have Daz Studio saved on for instance mine is D: then what I pasted below) Daz 3DStudioMy Library
