Does anybody know if there's a velvet-shader for Carrara available - perhaps even for free? Or a tutorial to make my own?
I checked the archive and only found some old threads and I'm sure much has changed since then ;o)
Your help is ghighly appreciated!
Take care,
~Sassy~

Do you think that is a problem using the hair feature to create the velvet?
You can use the Anisotropic model to begin build the velvet... PM and I cna send a test that I did.

Try the Free Watered Silk shaders---take some of the reflections off and you have it I think?

Don't forget to allways check here for free material textures.
Here is one from my files.
Another to follow.

I tried unsuccessfully to make a velvet shader. The inability to customize highlight or SSS colors for falloff made it tough.
You could definitely use short fine hairs to do it, but I was hoping to do it as a shader. Good luck! Let me know what you come up with.

@GKDantas: Thanks so much for your offer to help! I'll ctc you, promised :o)
@Brian: I have this watered silk texture, but I'd never thought of usíng it as velvet. But I'll definitely try your suggestions! And yes, cgtextures is a site I visit frequently, but unfortunately they only have red silk, that fluffy type..... and I'm in need of the silk kind of velvet and that in royal blue, so.... but your black velvet texture looks excellent, I'll keep that ;o)
Has anybody actually seen a good texture pic of blue velvet? It seems that I can't find anything, either in the freestuff nor in the MP.

I just send to you the file, hope this can help you, maybe you can use it with the Brian texture in the color channel.

c6pro ain't got a free velvet shader? I just checked poser and it's got a velvet material/special lighting node. doesn't look too good IMVHO. would only work in distance shots. too hard to
do the thread/hair calcs for close-ups.

A lot of free stuff around if you do a search. Including here on Renderosity..
Even more with a Google search!
This tute is a good one that can be adapted to Carrara I suggest.

MissNancy, unfortunately there's none in C6P.
Brian, I've checked here and yahoo for "carrara velvet shader", but everything turned out to use plugins like shoestring shaders or shader ops and unfortunately I don't have them :o(
Somehow I have the feeling that making a simple velvet shader in C6P isn't that simple at all..... at the moment I'm trying my hands at the anisotropic model I got from GKDantas (thanks so much, hon'!)

Sassy I got the idea for my velvet shader from Eric DCG shaders... Carrara have the anisotropic model and this help creating the velvet look, but at same time you can try the fur system too.

I know I'm late to the party, but I found part of the key to a good velvet was using the False Fresnel function -- which I believe is part of Shader Ops.

Many months later I'm back to this topic ;o)
Actually, to create the velvet with the fur system is a tad bit too much for my PC.... as it's a whole dress that should have the velvet-texture.
Now I've downloaded the evaluation-mode of Shader-OPS from DCG - Does anybody here know how to create velvet with Shader-OPS? Brian, have you tried that before?

No need to get excited!
All thisstuff I "help" with is the result usually of brand new learning curves for me---- experimenting to find a solution--on the spot!

Thanks for the tip, Holyforest!
I think Brian's way is a great one for velvet and I found anotherone with shaderops that worked really well, too (an old thread over at Daz). So before I buy Lightwave..... I think you know what I mean ;o)))

Carrara has only one limitation: velvet shader - frustration.
Remember that I'm working under Carrara much more than under Lightwave ;)
