I've often found that infinite planes behave like "finite" planes i.e. I can see the edges. e.g.
Now try this
The Infinite Plane has become a normal plane!
Any thoughts? Am I missing something or is this another bug?
Thanks
Richard

I would think that the Infinite Plane would not be able to take a Displacement map, so Carrara changes it into a finite plane so it can handle the math. Otherwise it would have to add 'infinity' to all the calculations, and that would crash the machine.
Not so much a bug, but an impossible request that gets converted into something it can handle.

Hi Patrick
That's a really nice water effect - I've been trying to get something like that. Would you mind posting a scene or a shader to help get me going? My own efforts are a bit limited so far.
Thanks
Richard

I agree with craftycurate. That's some really nice water. A rundown on how you created that would be much appreciated. :)

Excellent thanks ... reducing the roughness from 2.05 to about 1.6 gives something closer to the illustration.
Nice one!

Thank you Patrick! Much obliged.

Yes. thank you. My terrain ended up looking much rougher than yours even after decreasing the roughness? I wonder what I didn't do right?

Check the world size?

Thanks, that's great info :)
craftycurate posted Wed, 09 August 2006 at 4:59 PM
Here's my variation on that basic theme ... tried to attach scene but it doesn't seem to allow .car or .zip files.

One thing - I want to alter the shader so that the specular quality of the water is less like plastic, but that's v2.
Thanks
Richard

Just play with the highlight/shininess. Looks good.

Thanks Patrick - the Terrain approach has been a real breakthrough today!

That's a lovely image there craftycurate!
And yes, my world size is set for 100.00mi x 100.00mi as shown. ???

A second attempt with some refinements, most notably, to increase the Fresnel property of both Reflection and Transparency of the shader to almost 100 - it gives a much more realistic colouring. Also increased the Reflection to about 90% or more - some recent "research" i.e. being at the coast revealed how reflective seawater is.
Had to play around with the Roughness and Offset terrain settings quite a bit, but I'm quite pleased with the result.
Also, the boat was too large and wrongly placed - it now looks correctly scaled.
Does anyone know how to attach a scene to a post, as they get rejected as "unknown file extension" or something like that.

You're only allowed to attach images in the forums. If you want to provide a .car file or shader, you'll need to host the file on your webspace and post a link to it here or you can post the link in the Carrara free stuff area.

Thankyou very much Patrick for sharing your knowledge & providing the screencap. Some very good & useful information.

Ialora, I might have decreased the vertical height of the terrain. You could try that in the terrain editor or just the basic properties.
Nice render CC.
bluetone posted Fri, 11 August 2006 at 8:06 AM
Actually, that's not altogether true... you can attach a different kind of file, just change the extention, (i.e. ".car") to a supported extention type, (i.e. ".txt") and then you can attach it to a message here. Just let folks know what extention it's supposed to be and your all set.

I believe text (including html) is the only non-image file type you can attach. You're not supposed to be using the forums for file sharing for obvious reasons. If it is now allowing various other files to be attached, I'll have to check with the programmers. I don't think that was an intended change.

It was not a change, you used to be able to do it no problem....
File exchange helps many people out here who get assistance from others by sharing the file that's causing a problem, or sharing a solution to a problem.
I think that IS within the spirit of this and other forums. If you disagree, then let's start a new thread and open this idea up to the community. I think it's important to leave this option open.

Hey craftycurate, I like the setup you have for your water... looks great! Can you possibly post a scene file? Just change the extension to .txt to post it if you are having trouble. I would appreciate it! Chucker
craftycurate posted Wed, 16 August 2006 at 7:07 PM
Thanks! Here's the scene - 12K. Remove .txt to get the Carrara 5.1 scene.
Why isn't it possible to upload files related to this newsgroup e.g. shaders, scenes? A previous poster said filesharing wasn't enabled "for obvious reasons" - what are those in this context?
Thanks
Richard

Thanks! Here's the scene - 12K. Right click on the red "x" above, and select "Save Target As ..." and change .jpg to .car.
To forum moderatorssite hosts - I'm not being funny here, but I can't even upload it to the "Free Stuff" area without posting it on the web first. Why isn't it possible to upload files related to this newsgroup e.g. shaders, scenes - there is a lot to learn from each other? A previous poster said filesharing wasn't enabled "for obvious reasons" - what are those in this context?
I know this is a free forum so can't complain, but it seems to go against the spirit of the website to disallow filesharing.
Thanks
Richard

There are a number of reasons for limiting file attachments. 1) Since attachments aren't checked and someone could upload anything, it protects both members and the site from malicous, against the TOS, and etc. type files being hosted here. Or at least attempts to. 2) Same reason folks are limited to one upload per day in the galleries and free stuff items need to be hosted off site. File space is not infinite, it costs money, and the forums were not originally meant to be used as free storage space.
Correct me if I'm wrong Mark, but I doubt anyone will complain about the occassional file_with_extension_changed thing you are doing now. It's probably not a big deal in the Carrara forum since most folks seem to want to only help eachother and want to share pretty small files. However, other forums have a bigger potential for abuse. Anyway, if you need a place to host or store files, there are free alternatives.

I understand that. Again this is a free forum and I'm not here to rock the boat, just to share what I've got. After all, it was someone on this forum who shared with me about using a fractal terrain to create water, and in turn I'm passing along some refinements I'd made.
Will think of another way to host files from now on.
Thanks
Richard

Thanks Richard for posting the file. It appears I was on the right track... I was following Patrick's setup but my water was too rough. After looking at your file I realized all I need to do is scale up the terrain to smooth it out. Thanks again.

ialora posted Thu, 17 August 2006 at 12:50 PM
Ah-ha! That was my problem too. The terrain size in your scene is 5000mi x 5000mi. Previously I was using 100mi x 100mi which I'm pretty sure is what is shown in Patrick's scene shot. Thanks!
If you need temporary file hosting, I have web space that I don't use. E-mailing me a file and then waiting for me to send you the link isn't as expediant as hosting it yourself. But I know some folks really detest using the free services due to popup ads and whatever. I'm happy to provide a possible alternative if needed. Now I'm off to go do something with that water. Thanks again! :)
