Yeah, I agree 100%... as we realized and stated (many times) in the earliest days of the ray-cast method development, "the closer the meshes are in shape, the better the results will be". That's always been the case and hasn't changed. The closest-vert method is more forgiving in that respect.
Having said that, for poorly aligned mesh shapes, I think Restore Details is pretty much going to be a manditory part of the process towards achieving those closely aligned mesh shapes, which can then be correlated for morph-transfers (unless you're using ZBrush or some other tools to get the meshes shaped well). With that in mind, I don't know (without further testing) that the Hybrid method is any "less" desirable than straight closest-vert for a first pass - assuming a Restore Detail pass is going to be needed anyway.
Speaking of which, thanks for the file link.. I'll do some testing when I get a chance.
