Thanks again for the testing and results... I'd really rather not comment much more until I've had some time (later tonight) to sit down with this again - all my comments so far have just been from drive-bys at the computer :).

I hadn't really looked into the dropped verts issue yet either... could it be coming from the screening code or something?  Maybe they're not being checked at all.
